Early this May, the first batch of prototypes of the new 918 Spyder of Porsche has gone testing in different locations in Europe. Just this week, Porsche released an official photo of the prototype and confirmed some of the final specs that the buying public will get.
The development is in the end stages and there are rumors that the production version might hit the assembly lines as early as September of 2013. The car manufacturer also confirmed that the first deliveries will happen before the pages of the calendar ran out next year.
The photos of the 918 Spyder prototypes remind us of the old racing cars (the Porsche 917) and hints of what we can expect with the new ride. A lot of the details were revealed when the concept version was unwrapped back in 2010. Porsche recently confirmed that the new 918 Spyder will sport a bigger V-8 with 4.6-liter displacement that can give out 570 horsepower. The concept car before only featured a 3.2-liter V-8.
The powerful engine will be in tandem with an electric motor. The power sources will be linked to the rear axle and will be able to spin it independently or in combo. Another electric motor will be powering the front axle. The total output of the system will be around 770 horses. The lay-out will also give way to a four-wheel drive or two-wheel drive setup.
The battery pack of the car can be charged at home and this power source alone can give you a range of 15 miles and a decent 93-mph top speed. Porsche is looking into a 0 to 60 mph sprint below the 3-second mark with a top speed reaching more than 202 mph. Fuel economy will be at 78 mpg. Yes read that again, that is the fuel mileage for this ride.
The company will only produce 918 units of this ride and orders are on going with Porsche. The sticker price is a whopping $845,000.
